A perk of getting older which I just recently found out – senior citizens, at least at our library, are not subject to overdue fines. Of course, neither Calvin or his parents are senior citizens, but just thought I’d mention our library policy anyway.

Calvin checked out a book?

At one time in my life I lived in libraries, some of the best in the western world, but I was frustrated as a kid, only allowed to check out juvenile books. That held me back several years.Absolutely stupid policy.

I suppose a discreet unattractive middle-aged woman with glasses and without private life. Emh… just a cliché.

I agree with Calvin. For certain types of individuals, a look is more effective than a weapon.

When I was young (early 1950s) my Dad brought me home a book from the library to read. At that age, I had no idea what a library was. So I kept it for a loong time. Had 35c in overdue fees. THEN I knew what a library was.

Bad librarian pickup line: “Hey baby, are you overdue? ‘Cause you’re lookin’ FINE”

It was a penny a day when I was a kid. Never had to pay it as Mom was a mystery book addict and she’d call “Go get your library books!” whenever it was time to go to the library, so my books were never overdue.

Calvin’s Mom could have worked this to her advantage…

Intimated that only she could intervene with the librarian, but that Calvin would have to be his best behavior.

Somewhat like Santa Claus…

Thank God for the Internet and cheap used books on Amazon. Sadly to say, my Library experiences were not pleasant ones – neither public nor University.

I remember that look. That’s why even with today’s friendlier staff I’m still never late returning them.

When I was a kid the library had a “bookmobile” that came around once a week. I was a week late returning a book.

The last fine I had to pay was probably 70 cents.

I’ve never had an overdue book, so I wasn’t even sure what the overdue fee is in our library.I just looked it up on their website, and guess what? It’s 5 cents a day on books. It’s $1 a day on videos.

In the distant past and far future Librarians will regain their power and be dangerous again.

Calvin must’ve begun learning English when he was in utero.

Believe or not,here in San Lorenzo, Ca. if you lose certain books they find you $100.I’ve never lost a book yet!

I bet it’s a lot more expensive now…

My wife and I spend a fair amount of time in one of our local libraries. We volunteer to keep the library’s history center up to date.

After all, when it comes to local history, who is better served with the knowledge of the past than seniors…

Of course, they’re opposed to public anything, preferring a eat-or-be-eaten world to civilized society. Or, perhaps they’re just against people knowing things. No wait, that would be the republicans.
