Rat: Hey, Goat. I'm here.
Goat: You're late.
Rat: I said I'd be here at two-ish.
Goat: It's six o'clock.
Rat: 'ish' buys you a lot of time.
Goat: Not four hours!
Rat: An 'ish' is very flexible.
Being an âishâ-ish sort of person myself, I tend to be misunderstood by those who think three oâclock, say, means three oâclock.
What I donât understand is how everybody but me apparently knows precisely how long it takes to do everything a person needs to do, in order to arrive someplace, however far away, wearing the proper amount of the right attire, bringing the appropriate food, tools, gift, or whatever the occasion requiresâŠ. at the exact moment requested.
Itâs not only something of which Iâm incapableâŠ..
itâs black magic, I tell you, and Iâm suspicious of it.
My sonâs marching-band director used to refer to âLibby Timeâ (Libby being the band directorâs name). â2:00â meant 2:00. â2:00 Libby Timeâ meant 1:45. And if you arrived at 1:50, you were late.
My wife used to be notoriously late getting out the door to go to church. One Saturday, I set all the clocks in the house, including her watch, 15 minutes ahead. The next day, we were âlateâ getting out the door, until I showed her the clock in the car, which I had not reset. She was less than thrilled, and made me promise to never do that again.
If my family is planning something at 4:00, we have to tell my sister 3:30. Then maybe she will be there by 4:00. My other sister and I always arrive early because we canât stand being late. My aunt once said, âWhen your sister dies, the minister will say âthe funeral can start when Linda gets hereââ.
