The Greater Auk and the Tasmanian ‘Tiger’ at least were both deliberately destroyed, as was the Heath Hen. The cod industry collapsed because of over-fishing, and the salmon on the west coast nearly went the same way because of the dams on the rivers. We won’t even discuss the Carrier Pidgeon, the Carolina Parrot, or the Dusky Sparrow.
Well we helped to create Da’esh or I.S.I.S. and many others were directly created by our imperial machinations in their countries. Directly.
We are the only species that can ignore Nature and wipe out whole ecologies and what lives in them. We add heat trapping compounds to the atmosphere and create oxygen dead zones in the oceans and raise the acid levels of the oceans, clear out whole forests, fish whole areas out of life and still some wear blinders and think we can’t affect anything.
Once the phase transition is complete and the feed back loops on our changing atmosphere is self sustaining the end of the world as we know it will be complete.
My hypothesis that a Type Civilization can create disasters on the next level of Civilization is possible. We are listed as Type 0 yet we are affecting our entire Earth on a Type 1 Civilization level right now. The danger of intelligence. We are failing the test.
By the way, fire ants were unintentionally, accidentally introduced to North America. They might have entered without human action eventually, but didn’t. There are many species of ants I saw around Northwest Florida in my youth which seem to have been wiped out, most likely by fire ants.
Burmese pythons are wiping out wildlife in south Florida. Human intervention but not intent.
Chinese chestnuts wiped out American chestnuts.
Some plant disease is currently wiping out the ash trees, I am told.

It gets even darker if you believe the common interpretation that this strip takes place sometime AFTER the end of the world…

On the contrary, extinctions are a natural part of life. Although some relationships are symbiotic, most living things are competing.

Obviously nobody is saying that, but a nihilist death cult like ISIS is obviously more of a problem than people who jaywalk.

I wonder if the human is the only species that will make itself extinct.
