It’s ironic – in the scene as understood by Melcher, the beefy lad on the right is coming in and trying to find out what’s going on; in the scene as understood by William Etty, the artist, that guy is trying to slip out without being noticed, particularly by the lady. You see, the fellow in bed is a king named Candaules; the lady is his very faithful wife, Nyssia, and the beefy fellow is Gyges, one of the king’s guard. Gyges doesn’t even want to be there; his boss made him hide in the room to see the lady’s nude body just because Candaules was way too macho proud of having a hot wife. Nyssia gets really pissed off at her husband—and why not! Here she is a good, beautiful and faithful wife, and here he is making a spectacle of her without her knowledge or permission. So she also puts Gyges between a rock and a hard place: help me kill my husband or I’ll have you killed for seeing me naked. Gyges once more folds under pressure and kills Candaules. However, it’s not so bad; Nyssia marries him and makes him king. So the good guy gets the girl after all!
The story is from Herodotus, who never lets the truth get in the way of a good yarn.
William Etty is the subject of a first-rate Wikipedia article, which I highly recommend to the other art history buffs out there. The intriguing thing is that he took tremendous flack back in the day for painting nudes. Huh? Didn’t they all paint nudes? They did, but Etty was in the habit of portraying women’s bodies relatively realistically. That was a deal-breaker. Yuck! “Dirty flesh,” one reviewer sneered in disgust. How things change…except that idealizing women’s bodies is still very much in vogue, as the airbrush has given way to the far greater power of Photoshop to give us women as we wish they were, not as they really are.
