I think Gunther is starting to see what a party pooper he’s been. I really like this arch because it shines new light on the characters, where Tiff is finally the person that is being a good person and isn’t in the wrong.
Well, that was unexpectedly easy. Gunther has been harboring rage against Mr. Gray for who-knows-how-many years (Luanniverse time), and all it takes is one comment from Tiffany, and all that rage deflates. Quick way to make it go away from the strip.
Remember in high school and junior high where Gunth was the mature smart one that excelled in all curriculum stuff, well now everyone else is surpassing him and he is failing the subject they didn’t teach in school, people skills.
Tiffany is a miracle worker. She tamed the angry Gunther-beast, and even told us new stuff about her own home life. Now, all she needs to do is develop better taste in men…
There are a few hidden messages coming from Tiffany:
1.“My dad dated a lot. You’re lucky your mom’s always been there for you.”
Hidden message: Is Tiffany saying that Gunther is lucky that his mother did not date a lot? Is dating a lot the opposite of always being there for you? Tiffany seems to prefer the parents that date only a limited amount, like maybe just one person. Tiffany doesn’t like the multiple mothers.
2.“OK, so stop being a grump and let your mom be happy!” “Give Mr. Gray a chance!”
Hidden message: Notice the use of the conjunction “and”. The way for Gunther to let his mom be happy is to stop being a grump. Giving Mr. Gray a chance is a whole separate thing, and that leads us to…
3.“Besides, isn’t he just so cuddly?”
Hidden message: It sounds like Tiffany is interested in a relationship with Mr. Gray and I can see her point. Earlier this week, Leslie mentioned that his uncle, Mr. Gray, knows a guy in Hollywood. Tiffany wants to work in Hollywood and the only guy at that dinner who can make that happen for her is Mr. Gray and not Leslie and not Gunther. Relationships between young women and much older men is a standard for Hollywood actresses going back 100 years. The question is whether Greg Evans is willing to take us there.
Looks like Hitch(Mr. Gray) and Paris(Tiff) charmed each other very well. Now Gunthy, Tiff has laid it out clear for you to understand……. Will you please? And lay a wet one on those beautiful lips, that are waiting for you to do just that? Lay the grouch to rest!
I was a bit appalled and perplexed yesterday when several readers said that Mrs. Berger first gave Gunther excessive attention… and then dropped him when other men came around. They blamed her as much for dropping him as for smothering him.
I sure don’t readily see the dropped part. They’re still very much part of each others lives, but she’s spreading her attention around a little more, and having some interests of her own. This seems the best way to encourage Gunther to have some independence as well.
Tiff has become so human. And it looks like Gunther drew her out. Mr. Gray must remind Tiff of her father. But Gunth could be in the right place at the right time. If they pulled over and made out a little – it would be a great cap to this arc.
Tiffany is a human, who has a mother who left her, and a father in grief who dated a lot. Her prior life has made her wise, for more than most here seem to think. She is rapidly becoming the most layered person in the strip. I think the romantic angle between Gunther and Tiffany is overblown, if not totally wrong. I think Tiffany just appreciates him as a good caring friend in need, and who is kind, and caring to her. They like each other, and trying to carry it further misses the point I think. As far as the nonsense that Tiffany is interested in Mr. Gray because she said he is cuddly, is jeez silly. She is not interested in him that way. The whole point it that she is trying to get Gunther to cut his mom a little slack, no only in her mind, but in HIS mind. She is basically saying why she sees Ms. Berger might like Mr. Gray and likewise. This is sweet.
okay , who is worse? Tiff’s mom or Shannon’s mom? Tiff’s dad or Shannon’s dad? and I would have thought having that in common might have made Tiff more sympathetic toward Shannon.
They went to the same high school, Tiffany should know that Les used to bully Gunther and understand why he doesn’t want to be around the guy. Les might have even physically assaulted Gunther a few times, I can’t remember now. Anyway, she ought to know why he’s so annoyed about having to associate with somebody he hates.
Mr. Gray would help Tiffany, but not on a sugar daddy basis. He would do it because it would be a good thing for him, and because his love Ms. Berger would encourage him too, and Tiffany would use him, in a good way, as a person of influence. Mr. Gray is a quiet power kind of person, he has seen it all and he likes the calmness and love of Pitts (whatever the town that Luannverse is in, I forget) and Ms. Berger. I am looking forward to them marrying, and the relationship having so many good things happening to Les, Gunther, Tiffany, and generally.
I’m glad that the strip is finally explicitly stating that Gunther is an unpleasant character. He is certainly portrayed that way, but no one has been willing to admit it. Team Evans should either have him change, or they should send him away (again). His whiny behavior is not amusing. Maybe Tiffany’s calling attention to his grumpiness is an indication that the character can still be redeemed.
I find it most interesting when characters break out of their clichés, as Tiffany does today. Most of us do that in real life, as we mature. Of course, at any time one can rëenter the land of clichés. For instance, I am dangerously close to the Grumpy Old Man stereotype.
Something Dreamdeer wrote reminded me of a favor i want to ask. As many here know, we do not see movies till they become available electronically. BUT we have a friend in a crowd scene bit part, so i want to ask if people spot a 6’8" woman in the new movie, the Mummy, could you, please, shout out to me here? I am hoping that scene makes it into the movie. (And, yes, Uche and her family are tall.)
Tiffany’s Mom “left.” Tiffany’s Dad dated around and around! She was, in effect, orphaned and starved for attention and love when growing up. That pretty much explains her Character flaws—and, yes, she has some. But she is at heart a decent, and respectable, if ambitious (and is that all bad?), girl. She is good with Gunther, helping him to deal with his Mommy issues and herself in the process by getting her own issues out in the open. If only Gunther weren’t so squishy! As for Mr. Gray being “cuddly,” it’s just “cuddly like a teddy bear” and for Mrs. Berger (not for Tiff herself, for goodness’ sake)! Let the arc continue.
Tiffany should have been the one to need air yesterday…. and yet…. she continues to take the high road as she pinpoints Gunther’s selfishness. Her comment about Mr. Gray being ‘cuddly’ is meant (I think) to be funny and mostly rhetorical. I believe she enjoyed the sense of family togetherness, something she never had growing up. Of course she liked being the center of attention but this time I think she earned it.
I find it of interest that no matter how upset Gunther has gotten in this arc, Tiffany responds calmly and nonjudgmentally to him, responding to what he says, rather than reacting to his dramatics.
