To do that here, you’d need to pay two monthly service bills, unless you didn’t want to be on a 4G network or make any calls or texts with the smartphone, and just used it as a wifi tablet.
I carry a low-end Samsung smartphone, missing a few specs of a “flagship” phone, but about a quarter of the price.
It suits me fine, except for being a bit short on internal memory, and SD cards don’t work for installing most apps.
In Europe and Asia you can buy various lower-cost, mostly Asian, brands, very competitive on price and features, that we don’t often see in the US,
Sometimes a pre-paid service will offer them…and Huawei, for one, seems to be making inroads into the mainstream.
But phones here are more closely tied to contracts with major carriers, who stick to Samsung, Apple, LG, Sony and a few other well-known brands.
Right now, my favorite “app” (if you can call it that), is the “&comments=visible” that I add to the end of the URL in my address bar that lets me see ALL the comments on this page — including replies to the “featured comment”! Take that, GoComics gremlins! ;o)

Second “Daddy’s Home” Question:
Going for a walk? (Me, I’ll be taking a bike ride later…)
My favorite app? Jalapeño poppers (cream cheese, of course). Oh, you didn’t mean appetizers? I have no apps; I have a flip phone with texting disabled. Now get off my lawn!

Favorite Android app?
Can’t say.
I don’t have a ton, cos my phone won’t hold a lot…
but what I have is carefully curated.
And since they call the phone function itself an app, and the camera and contact list are also apps… I’d hate to whittle the list too far.
Meanwhile, it’s become the fashion to call certain Windows programs “apps.”
Just as “directories” became the more accessible-sounding “folders” … MSPaint is trying to become an “app.”
So what’s my favorite computer app?
I’m old. I have “programs.”

I’ll agree with Tigressy, Camera!!!

@Susan I use an old-fashioned mobile for calls and SMS mostly. No apps there!
The newest one (a gift from a Korean friend) is excellent for HD-snapshots and -videos.
Lighter than a camera, therefore…

What are these “apps” of which you speak? My cell phone is so old it has a rotary dial.

@Susan Even stop-watches require an app nowadays!
That’s just sick.
