I read the direction first and follow them to the letter then stomp around (and curse) until some one points out that I skipped step three when turned the page.
My father was like that. He would do things the hardest way imaginable. Instead of running a line down the inside of a tube, he would try to push it UP!
In my experience as someone who writes instructions for a living, if the directions are not clear enough, it is likely because they were not tested before they were printed. We call this a usability test, and its whole purpose is to ensure the directions are clear enough. If not, they get re-written.
