Yankees won but it wasn’t a shutout.

Plus, Trump has been bragging about the stock market even before he took office.

I think the stock market is kind of in spite of him.

“He doesn’t care about content or policy or outcomes – he just wants something to take credit for.”

Horribly, this is dead accurate. He pretty much said so, when he said he would sign any health care bill the Republican Congress passes. He actually doesn’t care about what it does, or what its consequences are. He just wants a win.

Someone who thinks like that shouldn’t be running a food truck.

This week, the question is how will alternative facts spin the racist garbage we have seen over the alt right in Charlottesville?

Point of fairness: The large majority of staunch tRUMP supporters are NOT alt-right wingnuts or fascists. They are people sincerely fed up with the “professional” politicians in Wash. who ignore their needs and fears. They are suspicious of the “elitist” press, who they view as mocking and condescending. These folks are genuine and look at the Orange Emperor as their anti-hero who is thumbing his nose at the D.C. Establishment.

The United States is so deeply divided, so polarized in it’s thinking, that there is nothing that can be done anymore, to bring these ideological opposites together. We are on the brink of another Civil War – perhaps not in my lifetime but, I fear, within the lifetimes of my children and grandchildren.

There is no excuse for Trump’s moral equivalency of saying both sides were at fault, etc. Those who were demonstrating as alt right folks were advocating tearing at the very basics of our democracy and what we cherish in our US Constitution. Just because they have the right to say stupid stuff doesn’t mean the rest of us have to sit idly by and take it. Also, many trumpsters do support the alt right point of view, probably more than one might think. Believing in racial prejudice and acting upon it in a covert way is probably very common, as opposed to someone who would march around shouting Nazi slogans and threaten others with bodily harm and try their best to find various ways to intimidate others. The Confederate symbols are outdated and very hurtful to many in our country as a reminder of racial prejudice and should be eliminated from the public square in the United States. Don’t forget that Germany, which is a democracy, does not allow memorials or symbols of any kind which allude to Hitler or any other Nazi crap. It is illegal in Germany to have such displays. I say this as someone who had family who came from the South and fought for the Confederacy. I can’t change what my ancestors did in the past. I have no pride in any ancestor of mine who fought for the Confederacy. I like generals who won the war. They want a statue? Win the war. As bloody and difficult as the Civil War was, it is over and the right side prevailed. My father fought against the Nazis in WWII. I know that he was proud to have participated and I do feel proud of his service in that particular war. We have a long history in the United States in terms of war, some wars we can feel good about. Others, not so much. In terms of the Civil War, though it was brother against brother, the right side won. The only reason why there are still problems with the way we think about it is that some are too simplistic in thinking that they have to own the Confederacy due to being from a certain region.

Trump’s taking credit for the LA Olympics? What, that they got the consolation prize, to host in 2028, instead of 2024 like they wanted? Or that they’re willing to host at all, since practically no other city/nation is willing to anymore?

Speaking of alternative facts, Jerry Falwell Jr., who never disavowed his racist father, who was a segregationist who built whites-only schools, and defended Apartheid, tells us that trump is not racist.

It was also interesting that trump stated after the Charlottesville tragedy that it should be up to the local government to decide what to do with Confederate monuments. It seems that unbeknownst to trump, this is in fact exactly what had happened. The Charlottesville mayor and city council had actually voted to get rid of the Confederate statue. Many other local governments have decided to do the same. I don’t know how in the world else it would have happened, to be honest. An anonymous person would not have simply called up some folks to come and remove the monuments, after all.

If anyone wants to understand America’s dangerous fascination with populism, they should read up on the man, who almost changed the United States – William Jennings Bryan.

I often shudder to think what this country would have been like if ( to quote a line from Inherit The Wind ) that " Barnum-bunkum, bible beating bastard " got elected.

The difference between Bryan and Trump, however, is that Bryan was sincere and believed every word he spoke.

It’s really very simple. People tend to prefer the company, and feel more comfortable with, people that are in the same group as their own. People tend to prefer that their children marry within their own racial, religious, geographic and socioeconomic group. Every person within a group wants their group to grow and succeed, almost always against the interests of other groups. Hence, there will always, always be conflict between groups. The only solutions come about when one group merges with, or eliminates another. Over the long run, the solution to racial problems in America will emerge when races are blended evenly. It may take many years, but when everyone is a brown/black/asian/etc. blend there will be fewer racial problems.
