One thing I learned in dealing with customers is always refer to women as Miss.

Step one: Call her “Ma’am”.

Step Two: Gotcha. RUN FOR YOUR LIFE!

If we need to refer to a person’s marital status when addressing them, then maybe we should continue to refer to unmarried men as Master.

Who would guess ‘DEPLORABLE SUE’ as Donald Trump’s comic pen name? He still reads it!!

We must destroy all customs!

Ultimately, they all have their origins in the past when all our parents and grandparents — all the way back — were evil sexists, racists, materialists. If we honor any of them in any way, we are condoning their evils. Even using their language and system of writing honors them in all their evil. THIS MUST STOP!

Just consider the very word “parent” and its relationship to “pere” or father, ignoring the more important and nurturing mother. Yes, we must give it all up to reflect our current perfection!

“Ms.” filled a linguistic niche that badly needed to be filled. Yes, it was an artificial construct, not something that arose naturally, but it did the job and people recognized its value, so it gained rapid acceptance. Unfortunately, the linguistic niche that most needs to be filled is a gender-neutral 3rd-person singular pronoun that implies a human being (not “it”, which is for things). There have been at least half a dozen candidates proposed thru the years, but none has ever caught on.

My own favorite is the capital letter E (similar to I, which we use for the 1st-person singular pronoun). Easier for texting, fersher. And, just to round out the single-letter vowel set of 5 (kids, collect ‘em all), I figure we could use U for 2nd-person singular and y’all for 2nd-person plural. These sensible proposals, unfortunately, have the drawback of almost all the artificial neologisms other than “Ms.”: they’re too artificial.

I just love the smell of Trump hate in the morning.

Several decades back, I received a postcard come-on to subscribe to Ms. Magazine addressed to, of all people, Mrs. Alexander GoodEnough, a creature who never existed by that name in any way, shape, or form. Really…

BTW, “Mrs.” is actually the abbreviation for “mistress.” Where do you think the “r” came from? “Missus” is just a slurring of the word.

I hope some day soon a practical, affordable quantum computer is available to eliminate, in real time, the outright lies and misinformation on the Internet before it appears on forums like this.

If the truth is that 40% of the population is xenophobic, nationalist, white supremacist, and anti-education we should accept , by our birthright laws, that they ARE citizens and go from there is dealing with them, or the 60% could start voting and change laws to mollify the effect.

Ms. is still widely used. As others have noted, it fills a niche for women as a title who don’t want to always have to speak of their marital status. Obviously there is only the term Mr. for men, which doesn’t inform anyone of marital status.

DS seems to be an example of what happened on Facebook during the 2016 election. Americans could learn something from the French. Russia tried to interfere with their election and got nowhere. Suddenly, the RWNJs all want to align themselves with Russia, which is scary.

About the last frame, first, the construct of “Mrs. Rick Caucus” demonstrates Trudeau’s talent for the absurd. I can’t imagine anyone constructing such an address from the available data.— Second, Joanie’s comment about it sending a shudder through Rick is also an absurdity. Rick has seen so much that he only mentioned it to get a reaction from Joanie (and from us the readers.)

It’s only partially correct to say that the Electoral College give small states an advantage, and that derives mostly from the design of Congress. The number of electors equals the number of representatives plus the number of senators. Even the tiniest state therefore has three electors, amplifying its clout.

But the real clue is that, if the election goes to the House, each state gets ONE vote. The apparent intent was for the STATES to elect the President, but by a channel outside of Congress. Apparently the Founders wanted to avoid the kind of deal making that happened in Parliament. Your vote in California has zero to do with the vote from the guy in North Dakota.

The Russians infected our news media outlets with falsehoods and made up groups who opposed Hillary Clinton. There were many falsehoods and imaginary events which were attributed to the Clinton campaign. They will have to answer for their meddling at some point.

What is good for the goose is good for the gander except in trump’s mind. He has complained about people being mean to him online and elsewhere. Meanwhile, he recently retweeted a depiction of himself assaulting Hillary Clinton. This wasn’t some random person retweeting, but trump himself, per usual.

I happened to read in a Supergirl comic once that “Seña” is the Spanish form of “Ms.”

Those of you who were only reading until you encountered such an exciting factoid may leave now.

We once lived in a neighborhood where the custom was for adults to be addressed as “Mr. [first name]” or “Mrs. [first name]”. One day one of the kids saw the male of the household in the yard but didn’t know his first name, only that of his wife. From that forward, Dave was known to everybody as “Mr. Jennifer.”

The custom of referring to women as “Miss” regardless of marital status probably goes back to England. There female teachers are addressed as Miss and male teachers as Sir without mentioning any name.
