It’s hard to say if the story was second-hand, third-hand or twentieth-hand, but I doubt it was all-out apocryphal, the story my prof told me about a couple of guys who went backpacking in the Grand Canyon for a few weeks in the summer of 1974 and surfaced to a brand-new president and a world turned upside down.
I remember thinking then about Rip Van Winkle, who it took 20 years to go to sleep an English subject and wake up an American, and a good deal longer for him to find out about it. And how, wow, now a 3-week backpack could do the trick.
Now — today’s now — the world can change that much while your phone’s charging. Then again, the universe seeks balance, or entropy, and sometimes I see it’s been more than two full Rip Van Winkle naps since that backpacking trip, and that very little has changed at all.

@Bartman666 no need to get political here, and you are. And your bias is showing. Leftists don’t like liars, slavers, Nazis, KKK, corporate malfeasance and fascism. They like a lighter USA. One of freedom, melting pot, acceptance, truth and the better American Way than you do. They love that America and so should you.
It would not have taken all 20 years then. The war only lasted from 1775 to 1783. But he slept through all the build up as well. To compare this to Watergate, you would have to have left in 1972 and come back in 1974. And a lot of people experienced a similar shock going to bed November 8th and waking up November 9th and finding out that Hillary did not have the election sewn up.
I think it would take at least 20 years. Technology changes quickly, but culturally we have completely stagnated. There’s been nothing new in terms of fashion, music or culture in the last 25 years or more!

@stychen tyme: is seriously personal invective an appropriate response to comments on a comic strip? Or in any discussion of any topic?

There’s always the ‘alternative facts’ media: NY Post, Washington times, Washington Examiner, and the granddaddy of all Fake news, FOX!

On another topic (getting hot in here…), history is not my forte. Can someone tell me what happened in 1839? Industrial revolution???
