What’s so surprising about that? We always forget our best ideas.

At a recent gathering of the ‘oldest remaining’ in our family – 2 in their 80’s and the baby at 73 -, we discussed that very process in depth . . . I think.

I think this strip is itself an example of a good surprise ending. Kinda meta, and all that.

I have a son who tells me the best sleep he ever gets is when he meditates. Puts him right under!

It shouldn’t be any surprise by now that I adore Kurt Vonnegut, and one of my very favorite Vonnegut creations is the character Kilgore Trout, who was a prolific but largely unread science-fiction writer whose work is expressed in premises, not entire stories. For example, the alien being who knew how to save the world and came to tell us how, but his race communicated by tap dancing and farting, and he only tried to tell us for a few moments before someone swatted him with the nearest blunt object. I could be wrong or a little off; maybe this is my reminder to myself that I’m overdue to get back to more Vonnegut.

Anyway, I love the idea of publishing just the concept and the hell with fleshing it out all the way to novel form. Bang out the essence, damn the details and move on to the next story. Of course I love it. That’s pretty much what I do here. Only not at Kilgore Trout level, because, of course, nobody ever will again.

“perfect” surprise ending? I don’t even think Hollywood can come up with that.
