When I was young, and still a Catholic, I remember one nun telling me that the “X” in “Xmas” actually came from the crucifix. The “X” in “Xmas” also happens to strongly resemble the “X” in that symbol on the Catholic altar – the one with a giant “P” on the “X” – so, “Xmas” has never offended me.
