There’s going to be a 2018 release of the movie “Stan and Ollie” starring Steve Coogan and John C. Reilly. Can’t wait. And Stan Laurel always referred to Oliver Hardy as “the funniest straight man in history.”
Stan Laurel and Charley Chaplin came from England in the same comedy troupe. When times were tough, they’d go out and swipe food together. Things like one would distract a baker carrying trays out to a delivery wagon and the other would walk behind him and lift a few loaves.
Odd choice, since neither Stan nor Ollie were straight men. They were the time-honored combo of the Stupidest Person In The World and his Stooge. Dumb and Dumber. Lenny and Squiggy. Toby Belch and Andrew Aguecheek. But possibly the best example of the type ever.
They actually DID have gay stock comic characters, called the “Nancy Boy” or “The Nance” for short. The Marx Brothers stage act had one, an actor named Paul Yale playing the part. Yale was actually straight, presumably, since he and his wife did a musical vaudeville act for years.
I met the Smothers Brothers (when they they were struggling to make it to the big time) in the parking lot of a Motel in Houston TX in the early sixties! I was attending a business conference and they were the act in the Lounge! I saw them attempting to fix the power window on their old Lincoln sedan and I walked over to see if I could be of assistance. They were a couple of friendly all american kids!
i’m sure they were at roasts during their time that made this joke look tame by comparison. and im sure they all would have laughed and some might have nodded.
Pig understands neither comedy nor English. As for Stan and Ollie (easily caricatured), I hope they pound Cartoon-Boy into the floor! Too many times sipping from the same trough….

I’ve heard of A&C as well as L&H, but not Smothers. (In the final panel, shouldn’t be Hardy and Abbott?)

Laurel and Hardy are easier to draw.

I guess I never thought about it that way.. neither Laurel or Hardy were a straight man, they pretty much had equal chances to get the laughs.
Bud Abbott and Dick Smothers were unquestionably the straight men in their acts. George Burns was the straight for Gracie Allen.

Dean Martin was arguably the best straight man.

So, it’s a sin to be straight now?

How about Wheeler and Woolsey?

If we still had Paulsen to run for President, he could probably win. Gracie Allen might have a chance, too.

Apparently, Tommy Smothers was the ‘gay’ man – because Mom always liked Dick best!

Wasn’t Snoopy running for President then? And didn’t both of them get a lot of write-ins?
