By that thinking may be called ātrinkle-down psychologyā unlike Calvin. Calvin is himself on his own. His Dad didnāt teach him to be mischievous.
He claims heās confident of an acquittal, expresses concern about a misinterpretation of the facts, suggests there are mitigating circumstances for any wrongdoing, and pleads nurture over nature, all in the span of three frames.
To regard the mitigate circumstances is truely important!
But we shall not push every fault to others, we must see the part of our fault, too!! Nothing will change, when always the others have the fault!
I see Calvin and Hobbes are both exercising their vocabularies this morning. My fave strips are when one or the other (or both) use words not usually articulated by 6-year-old boys and/or toy tigers.
Calvin and I like to read the comic strips, and sometimes what we read there actually fits our lives pretty closely. For example, today Calvin was talking to me about Santa deciding what is good and what is bad, and he reminded me of Linus wrestling with the same issue:
http://comics.com/zoom/240985/
Of course, many adults feel that comic strips are mostly fantasy and not always believable. Especially Peanuts, where young kids seem to have incredible vocabularies (and Peanuts is all reruns anyway).
Nevertheless, Calvin and I really enjoy reading the funnies, we highly recommend it, and you folks should try it sometime.
I couldnāt get here yesterday but would like to ask, was anybody else reminded of the all-time classic BBC April Fools prank about the Spaghetti Harvest? For those who are curious ā¦
Calin is wrong. Santa does NOT neglect the bad kids. He brings them presents. Lumps of coal, but theyāre all nicely gift wrapped by the same elves.
QUESTION: is there a court of appeals above Santa to try and get his decisions reversed? If so, I want Calvin as my lawyer!
Hobbes, I love your explanation. What I think then, is that perhaps, you are Calvinās conscience because you seem to always know what is good or bad, whereas, Calvin rationalizes his behavior.
At least Calvin took the toadās comfort into consideration. A snuggly sweater drawer sounds like a delightful environment to take care of oneās business.
Well third guy , educate all who are apparently, according to you, too under infomed to be able to express ourselves in a manner that you deem coherent
I love Hobbesās expression in panel two. He looks like heās trying to keep down something he just ate having to listen to Calvinās bragging about what a good kid he really is ā¦ itās just the environment around him thatās bad!
(But Calvin does have a small point. Just twice recently, we saw his dad unwilling to stop reading a book for even 5 minutes in order to pay a little bit of attention to his young 6-year-old son. And when he does spare his kid a little bit of time, he does nothing but lie to him regarding the simplest of things! Whatās an impressionable boy like Calvin supposed to do? I have a feeling thatās a small part of where heās picking this stuff up! He canāt get his parentsā attention any other way than except through mischievousness ā after all, attention for bad behavior is better than no attention at all!)
Hobbes you do not have to find any more things that Calvin does, that are iffy .
This, boy should get the message by now.
And Santa we all know keeps a ledger.
Calvin is typical of our society. We look for excuses for all our sins.
ā¦
When will we as a society insist that individuals, starting with our kids, take ownership of our actions?
Christianity (and Judaism before it) has been trying to encourage this for a long time. Maybe someday it will ātakeā.

Any Pib fans here know what happened to the comments there? There used to be a link for them now even that has disappeared :(
Check out the Gocomics Blogāitās several down. (There were also once lots of comments, not removed.)
I have long held to the opinion that Calvin is a lawyer/politican in embryo. This is proof positive, beyond a doubt. When he gets old enough to run for office, I will be long dead so Iām cool with the whole thingā¦.
DreamScourgeāthere was a message from UComics a few days ago that they were having problems with Pibgoreās comments. Sorry if I misspelled her, but I rarely read her strip. I would have thought, by now, that theyād fixed the problem.
Thirdguy, I am not presenting them as a logical sequence but as discrete examples of the ānot my faultā syndrome that has become pervasive in our society.
Prfesser, I agree with you but feel strongly that morality and ethics have their base in the home environment. Peers, circumstances, life experiences influence us but the fundamental base is laid by the family.
Yukoner, I wasnāt presenting them as a sequence, I was saying that you presented them all as excuses that are used to do wrong.
A learning disability is only that, not an excuse to misbehave.
To include it with wife beaters and drunks is a diservice to those who live with something they were born with, and work to overcome everyday of their lives.
And Ponytail, you are a humorless, and arrogant, but at least you are obnoxious.

āWhen will we as a society insist that individuals, starting with out kids, take ownership of our actions?ā
I assume this is a typo, and you donāt want society to erradicate kids.
Why start with the kids and not oneself? If you are going to take ownership, start with yourself.
Also, if the fundamental base is laid by the family, then your argument logically follows:
She made me mad and, my family raised me that way. Thatās why I hit her. Itās my familyās fault.
I was drunk when I did that because alcohlsim is in my family genes. Itās not my fault.
