If someone calls from Poison Control, it is the latest scam. Saving money on your electric bill is also a scam. When they call about your grandchild, say “Vincent!” or some other name than your grandchild. When they say yes, hang up. This has been a Public Service Announcement.
Never answer for a number you don’t recognize, even if it’s a “local” number. If it’s someone you know or someone who truly needs to speak with you; they’ll leave a message. My parents (who are retired) do this and have never been scammed. As a matter of fact, when I got a new cell phone with a new number I left them a message and they called me back right away. Had I not left a message, they would never pick up even if I called over and over again. lol
If the republicans had their way, it would not be the scammer who would get in trouble in this scenario. Scamming poor people out of their money is what the GOP does – that an mass shootings of children. The real crime here is not speaking English!
i just say “One moment”, put down the phone, then 10-15min. later, check to see if they’re still on the line, that way i save the folks they’d call after me those minutes..
I usually get the opposite. Unknown robo-caller begins speaking to me in Spanish (maybe due to my LA area code). I always appreciate it, since I instantly know what is happening from the first word.
Once, before we had caller ID, I tried to shame a suspected telemarketer by answering with “CHERYL?!?! HOW’S MOM?!?!” “I’m fine!” Mom replied. It wasn’t a telemarketer.
I think it’s great to be able to speak more than one language. Knowing more than oe gives you insights, many just say they need to learn English, but that i used to be fluent years ago and sorry to have lost most of it. I often read a Spanish/english bible and gotten new insights such as "no debes caer en temptation, per libranos del mal.
We have our answering machine answer all calls. Those who know us know this and to talk. We started this long before there were spam calls -our number is similar to that of several locations of a national pizza chain as well as an optician and a doctor and we get loads of wrong numbers for them.
We don’t answers strange numbers on our cells phones with one exception – if I happened to get a call from the next county (different area code) during school hours I would answer as we are the emergency number for husband’s nieces – never has happened and I doubt it ever will.
IRS is putting out info on a new fraud. Due to hacks and such people may have real info of yours. They file a tax return and have the refund credited to your real bank account. (Sounds like they are stupid – right?) They then call you and say they are IRS and that a refund was sent to your bank account in error and they need to get the money back or …..
IRS has a link on the first page of their website to a page with all of the scams involving their name that they know of and what to do about them. I am an accountant.

I’ve done that! And I don’t speak Spanish, but a heavy German accent saying, “Hallo??? HaLOOOO?” will do the trick.

I like it that they show Tia Carmen being sharp and aware. She’s not a stereotype and the game she’s playing is a good one

Forgot to mention – do not stay on the phone with these idiots. They can record and piece together any message they want with your voice.
