It’s called practical engineering as in try it yourself before you call it done. Had that happened more often, lots of needs a little improvement designs would have been trashed and more hospital time avoided for those of us forced to field test (i.e. upside down in a field) on our own dime.
I can design (and build) something totally trustworthy (I’m a design engineer) To prove it I build my own cars (Street Rods) and drive them all the time. It is on my time schedule and budget. 12 years and 20,000 miles on a 33 Ford coupe without a single issue of any kind (OK MSD distributor did go bad last year in March before the show season but that was their part not my design).

Engineers – no matter what field – should be required to fully use and fix anything they design, before the product goes into production.
