Yesterday two posters made statements along the line that most of the commenters here are part of a “club” of nitpickers that are only happy at being unhappy. One poster said that an artist can draw any style he wants.
If those two enjoy DT as it is, fine. But for the majority here, it isn’t a matter of being happy at being unhappy, it’s just that most remember the strip when Chester Gould was creating it. We care.
I don’t demand much of pop entertainment but even the simplest entertainment has to meet basic standards. Taking aim at one or two minor faults is nit-picking; but day after day when basic standards are ignored, E.g., a police car is poorly drawn, arms are too short, motivations are murky, plotholes are the size of a galaxy, etc., then the commenters here aren’t being that critical.
There are too many people in this world who accept mediocrity. The rest want something better.
Gould had his artistic style but at least the characters’ arms were the right length and vehicles looked real – even with moon people and space coupes!
Even the Police sign has heard of him! And it’s scared! Look at how it’s cowering against the wall, poor thing. Yesterday’s police car has sped off in terror.
Why does Thick assume the serial killer is a “him?” Perhaps, with a nod to the late Ingrid Pitt, it’s Elizabeth Bathory or Carmilla/Mircalla. Or maybe it’s Tess’s evil twin, Ptomaine Ptessie.
Where’s the Thanksgiving message? Dick Tracy used to always have a message on this day. I remember one time on this day, the strip showed him and his family setting around the dinner table and Dick was praying that the justice system would improve. It IS true, this is not the Dick Tracy I grew up with!
“Even the Police sign has heard of him! And it’s scared! Look at how it’s cowering against the wall, poor thing. Yesterday’s police car has sped off in terror”
Panel-Panner, regarding yesterday’s posts from Locher cheerleaders, one of them, bburns651, had a post count of only two. Perhaps that is a sock-puppet account belonging to NG49?
I haven’t seen anybodys avatars since the geeks who keep “improving” Opera made one of their upgrades several months ago.
About complaining about this strip: It can’t be helped. Locher has consistently depicted Tracy as an insufferable coward. How such a detective could remain on the force is beyond me. But then, we see the Napperville police— and then we begin to understand maybe a little. (Few of us can get over how a man could be killed right in front of the entire police force and nobody— absolutely not one cop— did a thing about it in the Science Museum arc.)
It could have been different. A number of us have been viewing “Plainclothes Detective” to see how Dick Tracy should be done. Now, there’s a couple of artists who know their stuff.
Wait, there’s a club? Are there dues? Would I have to get a tattoo? Is there a hazing ritual that involves having a matching tattoo put on a dead body? And counterfeiting? Would I get to throw people dressed as playing card characters into smokestacks? Where do I sign up?
And yesterday’s police car? I thought it looked awfully Soviet Bloc-ish. Well, a Soviet Bloc for the 21st century. The Soviet car - of the future.
Hokey smoke, I haven’t read The Family Circus yet! That P.J. He’s getting to be quite a handful…
But is this serial killer worthy of Thick’s attention? Does he deserve the attention of the man who has several gold medals in the Olympic four-hundred-meter run-and-cower? Is he, in fact, at least half as evil as a man who operates international charities and goes green by recycling a corpse?
And for the posters who gripe about the “negative” comments, they obviously fail to understand that the comments ARE the entertainment value of the strip
He is a bold one! He kills right in front of the entire Naperville PD and leaves the body on the stage to rot! He tattoos a corpse so it can’t be identified! He is a rascal….
Deberrymanal1, notes the strip’s DRIFT away from the ’traditional’ obervance of special seasons.
A ‘hallmark’ of Chet Gould’s Dick Tracy - particularly their Christmas Greetings, often a break from the ‘action’ to reach ot to the readers … and it would be a single panel strip with the whole gang.
But the current Author shows very little interest these days (?)
For those who looked forward to the Seasons sentimental greetings there was no outreach on December 25th in 2006 nor in 2007. On that date in 2008 we had a one panel (out of 3) in front the Tracy home With Tess, Tracy and Junior. Bonnie and ‘Cool Dude’ (Joe Tracy) (who live at home) were ignored and missing. What seemed loomingly important was the portryal of ’new’ Junior (who no longer ’lives’ at home).
http://www.gocomics.com/dicktracy/2008/12/25/
In 2009 it was once again a subdued one panel presentation (among 3), Showing Tess and Dick.
http://www.gocomics.com/dicktracy/2009/12/25/
For the record, the last outreach presented in good taste was in 2004 while Mike Kilian was still around.
http://www.gocomics.com/dicktracy/2004/12/25/
It’s no big thing ! But when proffered, it projects a warmth of feeling, and outreach which most readers appreciate
That’s right, JCFremont! Of course there is a club! I am the Club Secretary and Treasurer. Your class of membership is a dollar a month (that’s cheap!) and allows you four posts a day. The dues go to pay the postage on the daily posts (nice pun, eh?) Now, how many months have you been reading the strip and I don’t see you have remitted any of your dues. We don’t want to post your name on the bulletin board as being in arrears, but may have to.
Now if you wish to upgrade to Silver (Sponsor) Grade Membership, we give you a Thick bobblehead, frilly DT panties, and allow you to rant and rave. We even let you call the subordinate (unimportant) members Magpies. We have only two members with Silver status, Mattie & Jeffie.
Our top grade of membership, Gold (Benefactor) Grade, otherwise known as “Simon-ese” is by far the best! You are allowed to lose your body fluids each time you read the strip, which is the equivalent to having a magic joystick that beats the high score on every video game you play! 24/7! You have to call for a quote on the dues for this one.
I haven’t seen anybodys avatars since the geeks who keep “improving” Opera made one of their upgrades several months ago.
——————————————————–
I’m with you about the avatars. Mine also have disappeared.
I rarely post here, but enjoy the commentary. My dad read me Dick Tracy some 55 years ago, when I was a toddler. My first letter to the editor of our daily paper, back in the ‘70’s, was to express regret at the cancellation of DT. Sadly, I must agree with the vast majority of posters here regarding the lengthy nosedive of this comic strip. The ever-changing “Police” sign, the bizarre tiny hands, the never-investigated dead body from the Science Museum, the list is seemingly endless. I personally think “Simon Penn” is tongue-in-cheek in his postings, but who knows. Happy Thanksgiving.
The FBI wants Thick to serve as a jail-house informant. After his interference with the D’apostrophe arrest they figure he’s in jail on corruption charges, and will strike a bargain to get out. They’ll put him in the same cell as the serial killer and let them talk. In theory the killer will reveal something about his crimes to the expert detective.
Actually they know Thick won’t get anything from their prisoner. They’re going to wire the cell and play the recordings at their New Year’s Eve party. Could be the funniest thing they’ve heard in decades.
The killer is Dick Locher, and he’ll be possessed by the ghost of Nixon. This will allow Locher to write his most bizarre dialog yet when Thick meets the prisoner: “DIck, Dick. Dick, Dick. Dick? Dick! Dick … .”
Locher should make a cameo. Im wondering if hed make himself into a decent character or not. Would he play an idiot, thereby making Dick look good? Or would he play smart, proving Dick to be a complete and utter imbecile? Inquiring minds want to be know!
