Aaron Marx said that Jake would be the leader that Endtown, sadly, would need. I guess the sad part is the rat takeover, and Jake’s going to have to stop that, somehow. I’m beginning to wonder if the rats are real rats that took on human-ish characteristics rather than mutated humans.
I don’t think Freeman liked being played like a toy by Aaron Marx nor used as a bully club by Jacob. Jacob’s learning the hard way that he only has so much authority & exiling/executing seditious people isn’t under his authority.
this is the problem with having an unelected military leader being in charge of a civilian population. Assassination is the only viable option for reform but he LITERALLY lives up in a high tower where only his cronies have access.
Freeman learned his lessons well. Flask was their true leader. They respected her. Their allegiance was to her, the council, and the manual. They lost her, the council dissolved, but the manual remains. In Unity the rabbit statue had an arrow in his back……I wonder what Jacob’s will be? Bullet holes? A rope around his neck suspended him from a light pole? The Rats are harsh……but they are by the book.
Here’s the difference. Mallard started out as head of Endtown security, a task that he then passed on to Flask. When Flask disappeared while on a mission, there was no direct Endtowner line of command. This is something Marx must have been aware of, and it’s something that the council could have handled if Marx hadn’t subverted it, in getting Jake elected Mayor. It’s also something Marx neglected to clue Jake into before leaving. So, this has been a dangling live wire just waiting to zap whoever got too close to it. The point is, no one was designated Flask’s replacement, and that leaves Freeman free to follow the rules book. This may be a point that the cannibals hadn’t counted on, either.
Freeman is right. The colony is guaranteed to be stable if there’s no one else in it.
I think the Rats may be the source of all that leaked information. If this is a coup and has been planned, it all makes sense. The rats feed all the info about a shortage of food to Foxworthy, ferment civil unrest, and then when the powder keg blows, step up and take control “for the duration”.
Jack isn’t going to take this laying down, and that means war. I somehow doubt he’s going to survive what needs to be done. Or if he does, he’ll have to hop it the same as those he springs. But it’s not just external help that’s needed here. While the arch once again returns outside, the “currently” smug rats are creating one hell of a future headache.
Military leaders forget that “civilians” don’t like being suppressed. They are going to be at war with Endtown itself now. I don’t care how iron your hand is, you won’t ALWAYS be strong. It waxes and wains. If they crunch down on Endtown without any finece at all, then Endtown itself “will” “eat” “them” when they inevitably need help in return later.
The question is when. In the case of the rats, they have enough “chromies” that there isn’t that internal strife of shooting your own people. So removing them means taking advantage of that fact by waiting until they’re under enough internal pressure that a metaphysical “surgical scalple” can’t be blocked. Even then though, I’m seriously hoping fresh blood can be found that knows how to also say “stop it” in a way endtown’s residents can actually understand. One way or another, this is going to get bloody before it gets better.
Outside of y’alls’ conspiracy theories … ;) – Is it me or has the day the strip drops changed this month? I’m seeing Sunday and Tuesday for the recent strips. Did I miss a memo?? O.o
Uh oh, law enforcement no longer answers to the civilian authorities. “What we’ve got here is (a) failure to communicate” (i.e. sounds like someone is about to get a beat down…)
So Jacob Jackrabbit is the elected mayor… BIG DEAL!!! Walter Trimble was an elected mayor, too, and what a fine job he did. He was pretty much a politician in name only, until the Milk Trial made him pay better attention to his job. He’d still be mayor, if Aaron Marx hadn’t decided that Jacob was better suited.
Allgood did warn him that this would not end well. I hate thinking that he was right, for once.
Now Freeman is making another bid for power, and there’s no sign of Aaron Marx and his dimensionometer around. An ideal time to impose Martial Law. I guess we’ll all have to wait and see how Jacob is going to fix this mess.

Oh boy! Son of Flask! Hey Jake, welcome to Walt’s nightmare… ;-)

Menagerie? Is that what the rats believe the other mutants are? Shades of Unity!

Discussed earlier this week, since expulsion is about as good as a death sentence, would the rats reconsider and perhaps bargain with Jake?

Not quite as “supreme” a Supreme Leader as you thought, eh Jake?

I am beginning to wonder if Mr. Neathery is planning on a cataclysmic end for this comic in the near future. It’s been a good run, but…
