The cough drop flavor in regular candy never really had a large following.

In general, I don’t know why companies mess with the taste of something’s that already popular… and yet they do.

I can’t remember the name of the little pastilles, that had a licorice flavor, and came in tins. They worked great !

I also used to get Hall’s honey & eucalyptus that were good tasting.

When you could find them, a bag of horehound cough drops did the trick – whether you had a cough or not !

It’s best to make the cough drops not taste so much like candy so kids aren’t eating too many of them. Although my ex and I had a marriage counselor that ate regular menthol Halls like candy. He’d pop three or four of them in one session.

I remembered ! The cough lozenges I was trying to think of were Parke-Davis Medicated Throat Discs !

Parke-Davis Throat Discs came in a small, flat box that slid open. The dime-size lozenges were neatly arranged in stacks of three. There were 90 lozenges in a box, as I recall. Here’s something else I found out about them:

Like the Parke-Davis Throat Discs, Fisherman’s Friend contains capsicum (pepper extract) and licorice. The flavor is somewhat similar, but Fisherman’s Friend doesn’t have the zing of chloroform that the P. D. throat discs had. Yes, chloroform! Because of the chloroform, the P.D. box carried a caution about the number of throat discs that could be consumed within a given period of time.

We weren’t allowed candy in school when I was growing up, but were allowed cough drops because they were medicine. Later, we weren’t allowed medicine in school but were allowed cough drops because they were candy.
