For any one else who never heard it before: In economics, fungibility is the property of a good or a commodity whose individual units are essentially interchangeable.. For example, since one kilogram of pure gold is equivalent to any other kilogram of pure gold, whether in the form of coins, ingots, or in other states, gold is fungible.
How could Dad tell what the spelling is, when the pesky vowel in question is what we call a “schwa” sound (weak generic vowel sound, if you’ve seen an upside down “e” in a dictionary, that’s a schwa), and would sound the same either way? So how could he know?
[Yeah I know he read the word balloon, which raises issues with a world where when everyone speaks, this magical bubble appears above their heads with the words they intended…]
Danae is just doing what is becoming more common every day in things I read, or things people say. The other day I read an article on Facebook that meant to say that signs fall off fences due to inclement weather. What actually was there was acclimate weather – a totally different word with a totally different meaning! Nowadays, anything that will go through the spellchecker is considered to be right, which drives me crazy! Of course, Danae’s “made-up” word wouldn’t go through a spellchecker, but it’s still pretty much the same principle. If a word sounds like it means something, use it, even though it’s wrong!
P.S. to my comment above. I enjoyed this comic! It’s funny when this occurs in a situation like this. It’s just not funny in the real world when one is trying to understand something and wrong words are there.

Fungible means things that are mutually interchangeable. Sadly, it has nothing to do with mushrooms.

Of course it’s not about fungi—the g is a “soft” g. Sounds like a j.

I off-ten decimate a conversation with the exact same thing, adding optics.

Shouldn’t fungible mean it can be traded for mushrooms?
