What a hard thing it is to outlive a spouse. More often it is the women who outlive their husbands – I’ve heard it said that they have to stick around to pick up their husband’s socks.

Women tend to marry men who are older than themselves (established providers?) and also on average live longer than men. So it is no surprise at all that most women outlive their husbands.

If you see the excellent documentary film RBG, about Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, you get the distinct impression that’s the way she must have felt about her late husband Marty.

One of my aunts was dying and so not to do so in front of her husband she sent him on an errand and he found her quietly dead in bed when he returned.

She’s visiting with him in a dream. This is impossibly sweet, yet not syrupy. It reminds me why I think GT’s a genius with characters.
