Back when Abbott and Costello performed that routine on live radio it was used as a filler of variable length to fill out the time slot.
There is one recording somewhere of one of those shows where they are performing it and you can hear Abbott tell Costello to wrap it up. And he does.
Some of the movies probably wouldn’t make past the PC censors. Remember the one with the two form fit cooking pots?
Some 40 years ago, the routine was commandeered with the subject of producing a mega rock concert with The Who, Guess Who, and Yes.
