She failed to differentiate between responding and reacting; Responding implies you have time to ponder the issue (panel 3), whereas reacting (panel 8) is muscle memory – you just do something automatically w/out much thought beyond the time it takes to think “OMG!” Practice drills like “Code Blue’s” in hospitals, or infantry battle drills are for that purpose, to hone the skills that need to be practiced immediately, w/out time to spare.
Of course many men resort to the “Yes, Of Course I Would.” reaction after years of practice being married to avoid what happened in panels 4, 5, 6, etc… similar to the answers to, “Do these pants make me look fat?”
Sorry, but he’s an idiot. First he gives calm, reasoned answers as to why he might not try to save her. He should have immediately said he’d run through fire, jump off mountains, dive in stormy seas, etc. etc. Then when he does rescue her, after driving her to commit an insane act (she’s an idiot too) he divorces her!
