Elly says to Elizabeth, “Well, it’s a great idea.” That is completely in character for her to say that. There have been many comic strips that showed Elly finishing off the leftovers for meals herself instead of throwing it away. She does not like to waste food.

Plus that homeless guy in the final panel doesn’t seem to have any problem "Grunch"ing it down.

I love mixing cereals… different levels of sweetness, different textures, different levels of “crunch”…it’s all good. Today: Frosted Flakes and Cheerios.

Momma once did this with pickles. There were several partial jars in the fridge for some reason, so she just combined all of them, with a bit of the brine from each. The mix of dill, hot sauce flavored dill, bread and butter, and plain sweet pickles was interesting. (To say the least.) My middle sister still swears it was an acquired taste, but she grew to like them.

I have done that. I still do.

Some mixes, however, are better than others.

Yesterday morning, I made pancakes for my three-year-old granddaughter. We don’t even have cereal in the house.

Actually, my grandmother used to do that. Which lead to some rather interesting mixes such as Apple Jacks mixed with Klackers and Lucky Charms and Cheerios. One of her favorite things to say, after mixing inappropriate left-overs together was “Oh, it all ends up in the same place!” to which I would often reply “Yes, the toilet, eventually. But it has to get across the tastebuds first to get there!”

I still use recipes from my 3-volume collection of “The Tightwad Gazette”.

There was a strip where Elly was going through the refrigerator, which was akin to the above comments.

Elly: “How long has this been in here?…inspects some vegetablesThese are rotten…checks out some wrapped food PU, this smells like Michael’s room! Elly empties contents of entire refrigerator into a garbage bag Even though this food is moldy, rotten, and could cause illness, I still feel bad about throwing it away…”

Elly{talking to herself}: “…my mother would have made it into a casserole.”

I always mix four cereals: shredded wheat, kashi, cheerios and grape nuts. Add fresh fruit or raisins and milk. Voila!

Lynn’s Notes:

Don, my brother in law, routinely consolidated all the leftover crumbs and stale cereal remnants into one box which was called “Daddy’s Cereal”. While staying with my in-laws one weekend, I inadvertently poured myself a bowl of “DC” and discovered a satisfyingly new breakfast taste sensation. We began Don’s tradition in our home and I continue, even now, to enjoy this always evolving potpourri of dried cereal leftovers.

My late father in law did the same thing!

Rather than dumping everything into one bag, why not roll up the individual bags and put them into a single box. They can be mixed in the bowl, as desired, and take up no more space. Besides, I don’t care to have my chocolate contaminated with fruity cereals.

After having up to 5 boxes of stale leftover cereal, we agreed to stick to one type at a time. I don’t buy more until the current one is gone.

I did this once and I to eat it. Was interesting different flavors every mouthful. The color of the milk changed with every stir

Now there’s a cereal with a little bit of everything.

I notice everyone includes “Cheerios” in their cereal cocktails. My Mom bought it once and it hung around for years — I’ve never had it in my house!

Dads get a bum rap.

I like mixed cereal

A friend of mine introduced me to that many years ago. If you combine a sweet cereal like Captian Crunch with Cheerios, it is really quite good. You still get the taste of the Captain, but it is not as intense.
