Dared to have non-approved flowers. Put up Christmas decorations. Had the wrong patio set. Couldn’t afford the new roof/fence/landscaping….the possibilities are endless!!! I saw a home-improvement show where they actually left a gaping hole in the new privacy fence because the home-owner’s couldn’t afford what the board decided they all positively HAD to have, so; no money, no fence, no privacy.

I couldn’t live with an HOA, I would do things just to tick them off.

Homeowners Association ? I Don’t Think So ! I did not struggle and work all my Life to have “My Home” and then have someone Dictating to Me what I can or can’t do or have! I did remodeling work back in the 70’s in Jefferson,Texas for owners of the Bank. Their house was part of one of those “Associations” in a Historical area and they had put in a real nice swimming pool up close to the back of their house. The Association told them they would have to do away with it as it did not meet the requirements and regulations for the area. They disputed it and the association pissed them off said they were going to start issuing Fines, etc. to them if they did not do as told. Well you don’t threaten Rich People! They brought in a contractor and had a large Multi Color Dome built over the entire back yard! Fit perfectly into the 70’s theme. They then told the association that the problem was solved as they could no longer see the pool or yard and what they could do with the “Fines” as and were "Quite capable of paying the fines till they moved or died. The last I heard was that the association finally gave up. I loved it ! A Persons Home is “His/Her HOME”!!

When I purchased my home, I rejected 6 homes that we liked and would have purchased, The HOA was the deal breaker. It’s our home and we will do as we like with it. As an aside, could I be fined for TP’ing a home in an HOA system with the wrong color or type of TP?

Line from the immigrant neighbors on King of the Hill, from the wife to the husband: “Why are you letting other people tell you what to do? Is that not why we fled the communists in Laos, and then we later fled the homeowner’s association in Niobara County?”
