Yeah, Elly. The calendar was invented by Man. A new year merely observes a full earth rotation around the sun rather than what you were thinking – a glimpse into the future, predictions, hopes, etc. Time and space do not have future or past – just a continuous repetition of rotations of the planet Earth and of the days and of the nights. The future and the past were also invented by Man to measure earth’s age, to establish timeline, to record history, etc. That is not wrong, but to think a new year is a predestination merely because the last digit is changing to the next number is just wishful thinking. Not to say wishful thinking is wrong either – to hope is human, and you are quite human, Elly, but John is practical, and I am with John.
I think of the things that came to be since the first time this strip ran and she asked that question. Treasure your ignorance, Elly. You don’t wanna know what’s ahead. It isn’t pretty.
This is an old strip.. No way could anyone ever predicted that a fool like the trump could get elected in the US of A. Back when this strip was created we thought of Americans of being mostly intelligence.. sure some thought all Canadians lived in igloos and ate beaver for breakfast.. Guess we were wrong.. there are more dumb ones than we thought.
There was a strip where Elly was smug and self-righteous about being in the hippy-trippy movement and how the 21st Century will be one of long peace. Her rumination is interrupted by John frantically calling on the phone, asking her to turn on the TV, as the United States is under attack. When Elly does, her eyes bug out as it is 9/11.

{To the tune of the theme song of the “One Day at a Time” TV show}
-
This isn’t it. This isn’t it.
This isn’t life, the only one you get
Don’t go and have a ball.
-
This isn’t it. This isn’t it.
Straight ahead with all reprints
You can’t be sure at all.
-
So while you’re here Lynn just went and drew
Another change to what you knew
No century nor decade for you
One day at a time, One day at a time.
-
So up on your feet. Up on your feet
To where Elly asks a lot of questions
John won’t answer one
He’ll just say something homespun
-
One day at a time, one day at a time.
One day at a time, one day at a time.
One day at a time, one day at a time.
One day at a time, one day at a time

New Year’s Reflections
In New York City people crowd/To watch the lighted ball descend/They count the seconds all as one/To mark another yearly end
As people cheer and dance about/We all reflect on what has passed/What has gone on in daily lives/Around this planet wide and vast
The miracles both great and small/New friendships made and old ones kept/The loved ones gone and still around/Joyous laughter, sadness wept
The little things that brought a smile/The great events in distant lands/Small victories both won and lost/The kisses, hugs and holding hands
Another year has come and gone/Another Auld Lang Syne is sung/The ball descends, the clock chimes 12/A brand new year has now begun

This strip marks an end to the 1980s, which were the most prosperous time in North American history.
