I used to have a badge that read “I’m Surrounded By Idiots” but my boss made me stop wearing it to sales meetings.

Lou Costello (And Groucho Marx, for that matter) once credited Bud Abbott as having been the greatest straight man who ever lived.

As a kid, I had no idea what that meant. Eventually I laughed my @$$ off, but it took a few years.

Another interesting bit of information was Gracie of the team Burns and Allen was initially to be the straight “man” of the team. However, she got more laughs delivering the straight lines that the positions shifted.

Another famous straight man was Jack Benny. If you notice, the majority of the time he was setting up the other cast members to get the laughs ant his expense. Of course, he is remembered for delivering the line, “I thinking it over”, when threatened with, “Your money or your life.”For a better example of him being a straight man was in the “Si, Sy, Sue” routine.

I read recently that Stan Laurel wrote most of the material for Laurel & Hardy.
