Why do you think they call Nevada the Silver State? They, Nevada, gets to keep everyone’s silver. (Back when all the coins were still made of silver. Now the government, starting in the 1960s under President Johnson, has debased all our money. And now our coinage is now worthless.)

Nobody there makes you gamble; they simply provide the service if you choose to. I chatted with an idle blackjack dealer and told her I never gamble. She said “Good for you!”. There are lots of other things to do there.

I lost my entire weeks wages in a poker game 50 years ago working at a gas station. Going hungry for a week was all the incentive I needed to realize I didn’t want to do something so stupid again.

And what’s even worse is the states have legalized gambling. Don’t even need to go to Vegas to lose all your money now.

And, much of the lottery spending disproportionately comes from poorer areas.

My ex-GF had a great system. She’d go once every 6 months or so. When $20 was gone, so were we. These days, I have a good amount of disposable income, but I don’t care to dispose of it at a casino. I go in to the local casino only for their buffet dinner and bypass the gaming area completely. I don’t get a thrill out of gambling and restrict mine to a few (and I do mean FEW) dollars on the Lottery and driving on I-94 (in Michigan).

They don’t build those casinos off of the winners.

I’ve noticed that heavy gamblers always mention how much they’ve won but never mention how much they’ve lost to get those winnings. Interesting?

When I worked in Nevada I lived in Las Vegas and later near Reno, and enjoyed the occasional trip to the casinos, mainly for the food (great buffets!), but often for the entertainment value (maybe $10 to $20 max) of the slots; video blackjack, poker, or even keno; and maybe a few drinks. However, starting at some point, maybe the 1990’s, most places (at least the ones I went to) switched to payment cards (or whatever the heck they’re actually called) that contained the value you put in them, and value would be added or subtracted as you won or lost each game. So no more clinking of coins into the tray when you won (the real sound, not a recording), and usually no more pulling the lever on the slots (and certainly not the feel of the real thing, no pun intended). That took most of the fun out of it, plus it is way too easy to use (and lose) your money just using the card instead of having to handle each nickel, quarter, or dollar (or token) as you feed the machines! It’s better for the casino though!
