In 1944 Cleve Cartmill wrote a story “Deadline” in Astounding magazine. J. Robert Oppenheimer wanted to read it. He was one of the Manhattan Project scientists. He went to the project library that had the publication and was told he didn’t have the clearance to check it out. So he went to a bookstore and bought the magazine instead. The story caused a big stir with the paranoid secrecy police. They went to the Astounding offices to interrogate John Campbell, the editor. He said the story was coincidence and if they made too big a fuss over it, it would get out and the Nazis would know we were working on the bomb. The secrecy police backed off realizing this was true.
At first glance, I thought that king/pilot was another famous person, but I am not even going to say the name because of the emotional outbursts that would come with it.

Was the South Pole higher above sea level than the peak of Mt. St. Helens before May 18, 1980?

The South Pole may be higher above sea level than Mount St. Helens but it is closer to the center of the earth.

I’ll bet the nuclear science mentioned in a classic Timbuk 3 song was classified, too.

I’m sure being king of any country prevents you from doing a lot of things you’d like… Good for him.

You know, that’s silly; of course it’s higher – It’s on the bottom, the whole Earth is sitting on it…
