Charles Schulz had an unhappy childhood. That has been acknowledged by his family. Many comedians and artists are melancholic in nature, Tony Hancock was a classic example.
Timing is everything. One day I was in high school and was in a very laughing mood. I was walking with a friend, both of us laughing. We walked through a set of doors and I saw another friend, an upperclassman. He had gotten a perm the night before (this WAS 1980, after all). I looked up at him and laughed harder. I really wasn’t laughing at him per se; I was already there. He, however, thought I was. He was so mad that he didn’t talk to me again for a very, very long time.
MAD magazine had a similar gag as a cover story in a niche magazine for neurotics – it depicts a theater crowd laughing heartily at a Road Runner cartoon, while one man faces us with a wounded expression, captioned “They may deny it, but I know they’re really laughing at me!”
I actually worked with a guy like that. Any time I’d pass 2 or more people who were talking, then passed him, it was always, “They are talking about me, aren’t they?”

No, not at you. Just about a party to which you were excluded. Feel better?

Never heard little girls laugh “ho ho ho”. Come to think of it, other than Santa Claus…
