Tony is right, actually. It is classic motivational theory: if you want someone to do something, it should be 1) a task that they believe they can do, and 2) they should get something out of it, that 3) gives them some kind of satisfaction. The knowledge that he has made his homework just isn’t enough; – that might come in time.

We give treats to dogs because we want them to learn. Does the teacher want Toby to learn?

In my father-in-law’s day, they threw chalk at the kid for wrong answers.

if the teacher has to pay himself, knowing Toby, the poor guy would be BROKE AFTER JUST A WEEK!

I think Toby is barking up the wrong teacher.
