Let the kid spend a tour or two in the Military in combat and THEN let’s ask him if he wants to mock a veteran.

His victimization is a load of B.S. – you don’t get in someone’s face like that if you are, as he claims, trying to “defuse” a situation. Before you behold the perfect future Republican thug.

I know it’s hard but people opposed to Trump and his followers really need to think long and hard about sinking into the trap of descending to their level. Calling them names will never help beyond a few moments of poor satisfaction. As has been said before, take the high road, let them show their true colors with their attempts to anger any opposed to them with taunts and names. Use the truth against them, that bothers them far more any any juvenile name calling. Let them be the mud slingers, let them show they have nothing better than taunts and lies. Laugh at their taunts and juvenile name calling but don’t give them the satisfaction of being able to say “See! They are as bad as we are!”

According to the student’s own statement, available at length from cnn.com — https://www.cnn.com/2019/01/20/us/covington-kentucky-student-statement/index.html — he didn’t say anything to the American Indian protestor. His “smirk” was intended as a smile, hoping to show the man that he meant no harm or ill will.

I think his MAGA cap made a lot of people think he was an ignorant jerk, and I personally think his obsequious Catholicism DOES make him a dupe — but his own account of the incident makes it appear that he conducted himself in a reserved, polite manner.

Not usually a good idea to jump to the verdict before the investigation is complete.

What about the history of the native tribal conflicts prior to the arrival of Europeans? Especially in what is now Canada and the US.

The tribes present in any given location at a given time were most certainly not the original inhabitants. Climate, population growth, local droughts, territorial disputes, local politics, etc all drove the various tribes into conflict. Every tribe on the eastern seaboard at the time the colonists arrived had gained their territory by conquest and slaughter.

The NA “natives” engaged in an endless cycle of territorial and “ethnic” warfare. The only difference is that the European’s had better equipment and more people.

I wonder why that history is never discussed. Never taught outside of very specialized anthropology courses.

And we have a winner for stupid comment of the day!

Whites wanted to exterminate the red man, regardless of tribe. The Indians in the Continental US very rarely waged wars to exterminate enemies. Fighting wars requires significant social organization. Skirmishes, not so much. The Maya, the Aztec, the Inca and a few others had the social organization and expendable population for full-out war. In the north, not so much.

Indian tribes aided by whites could make war, too. But in the case of the continental US, battles would have been small scale affairs compared to what the whites did later. So casualties would be relatively light.

And most people who have actually read anything about the Indian wars know that Indians helped Whites to fight other tribes. Ever read or see “Last of the Mohicans?” Remember in “Dances with Wolves” how the Pawnee leader said he’d help kill Sioux? Well, the Pawnee did indeed work with whites against other tribes. If you rely only on bad Hollywood history, you might miss these things. Or miss the Apache Scouts, who helped track down Geronimo. Or the scouts who tried to warn Custer, but were ignored.

From the very beginning in the US tribes wanted the whites to help them defeat other tribes. That’s why the Pilgrims got such early help. There is no cover-up of Indian on Indian warfare. It just pales in comparison to White on Indian warfare. And poor andy just can’t do the math.

This is actually a sensible cartoon. Nothing wrong with either person’s opinion — both valid. Native Americans once had a great land of their own… and yes the USA had (and is losing) a sense of shared values, respect for the Constitution, legacy of Judeo-Christian culture, etc. This cartoon displays a legitimate clash of values. Mr. Philips does and probably feels justified in hating America. But there is no justification for lying about what happened and who harassed whom.
