Actually the open weave was so your sweat could get out. Hauling nets and sorting the hoist is very strenuous and even in the coldest of days you worked up a sweat.
The lanolin was brushed on, then, after a strong trip the sweater was hung outside for the rain to cleanse. Even in sub freezing temps snowflakes would hit the lanolin and melt to carry away the residue of fishing.
Thanks to the above comments this has become a very âeducationalâ strip. Now Iâm going to have to find some of the music mentioned just so I can say âoh yeah. That hook.â
As LOTHLORIEN singsHeave away upon the capstan give a hand to heave the trawl
So I went and I joined a trawler and itâs then I quickly found That it wasnât all plain sailing when you reach the trawling ground Heave away upon the capstan give a hand to heave the trawl
Youâll be hauling night and day me boys, youâre nearer slaves than men And once you get all your fishes aboard itâs time to haul again Heave away upon the capstan give a hand to heave the trawl
And when the waves are pouring around us and theyâre pounding against the deck Well youâll work your bit like all of the rest if you want to save your neck Heave away upon the capstan give a hand to heave the trawl

According to irishindeed.com, the Irish fishermanâs sweater was originally made with wool that retained lanolin, which made it water resistant.
The web site doesnât say, but I wonder what they smelled like. Wet sheep? Yeesh. And how would you clean it without washing the lanolin off?

Also, they expected the fishermen to be a little larger.

You wear the sweater under a jacket. The jacket is the windbreak and that sweater looks like it has about an r-19 insulation value

Iâve heard the sweater design varies by family, to aid in identifying fishermen when they washed ashore
