Coming Soon đ At the beginning of April, youâll be
introduced to a brand-new GoComics! See more information here. Subscribers, check your
email for more details.
This painting is presently at the Frick Collection, which also owns two other paintings by Vermeer. Their website offers a nice little essay about it, but you have to click the âmore informationâ button to see it. See https://collections.frick.org/objects/274/mistress-and-maid.
The title is, âMistress and Maid.â given that the painting is from the second half of the 1600s, itâs surprising to me that the maid apparently can read.
At www.essentialvermeer.com/cat_about/mistress.html thereâs an interesting set of three short excerpts from scholarship on Vermeer, along with an image of another Vermeer painting on a similar subject, his âThe Love Letter.â
The maid who facilitates and guides the love affairs of her mistress is all over the place in art, literature, and male fantasy in this period.
(best viewed using Google Chrome which can automatically translate most pages as necessary) has info and links that point to info about this roughly jumbo envelope size painting.
all have info, or links that point to more info, about this artist, perhaps in addition to whatâs pointed to by the first URL. So far, 7 works by him have been used here.Â
has the prior (nearly 6 years ago), which while my comment is still there, with the line breaks removed, its 27 hyperlinks remain inactive. ?&@#!#%&!
Â
Again, a larger strip image is shown by clicking the image in Mr. Melcherâs MASTERPIECE #2136 (February 11, 2019) blog entry, accessible by the Check out the blog! box after the last comment.

Vermeer is known for his use and manipulation of light, so Mr. Melcherâs caption is quite apropos.
