This painting is presently at the Frick Collection, which also owns two other paintings by Vermeer. Their website offers a nice little essay about it, but you have to click the “more information” button to see it. See https://collections.frick.org/objects/274/mistress-and-maid.
The title is, “Mistress and Maid.” given that the painting is from the second half of the 1600s, it’s surprising to me that the maid apparently can read.
At www.essentialvermeer.com/cat_about/mistress.html there’s an interesting set of three short excerpts from scholarship on Vermeer, along with an image of another Vermeer painting on a similar subject, his “The Love Letter.”
The maid who facilitates and guides the love affairs of her mistress is all over the place in art, literature, and male fantasy in this period.

Vermeer is known for his use and manipulation of light, so Mr. Melcher’s caption is quite apropos.
