The myths around artists abound. The idea that magically knowing how to draw a thing without learning how is one of my favorites. Of course, that myth is mostly held by kids who think that basketball players just automatically know how to play, and musicians just picked up an instrument one day and flew into a song without knowing how. Cute idea.
It is funny because there really are adults who think that it is cheating to use reference material. I’m not talking about tracing a photograph, just using one to see how the detail go together.

it’s called a ‘reference photo’….meaning just that. You refer to it for details and scale, but you don’t (or shouldn’t) trace it
