Anytime I’m out in the sun I wear a hat. I’ve had a few friends with skin cancer. My hat has started many a conversation and I’ve made new friends because of the logo on the hat. It’s usually a logo of a place I’ve visited or have lived. Always in good taste though.
I’ve worn a Leafs hat in every province in Canada and many cities in the US and cities in Europe and Scandinavia and gotten positive and negative comments. For the negative, I always have the same response, “There are two teams in the NHL, the Leafs, and any team that beats the Habs.” It usually gets a laugh, even from Habs fans. If you don’t know who the Habs are, you’re not a hockey fan(antic).
When I was growing up, my mother’s mother was a fanatic about keeping me out of the sun. “Princesses don’t get suntans. Look at Princess Anne, and she’s just a little thing.” She drove me crazy, but it served me well; I look about ten years younger than my age. (And no, I’m not a princess.)
My wife scorns my typical winter headgear – a ballcap (#3) with a neck warmer pulled up to cover my ears. Yet she squints on sunny days because a toque has no brim.

My hats do not have logos, but they start conversations anyway.

Our local YMCA was thrilled when I showed them photos of my daughter wearing their T-shirt all over China.

The only ball cap I wear is from my alma mater. You’d be surprised to see how often I met people who graduated from Fresno State!
