It does look like the same muted phrase is being repeated over and over. My vote is for dittoes grabbing Chic by the collar.
I wonder if this is what happened to Benny? I was assuming dead and the kids were assuming dead (looking back at the 15 February strip). He might’ve been snatched just as Chic is now.
Yeah, I realized that we had seen that sort of projected writing on board the alien ships. Like Marx’s ship.Perhaps it is another “Edmund Fitzgerald” in need of “fuel.”
Maybe it’s a thin spot in the membranes between realities. Something on the other side can see into this one, and maybe pull things out. Duffy said they were prepared “this time”. Maybe they have a rope in one of their packs that they can throw to Chic. I think we’ve gone beyond hazing.
Looks to me like another Lucranian ship is nearby just off shore. Chic is being pressed into the Lucranian navy. Like on the Fitzgerald when the Captain had to abandon the ship once he learned this reality was not dead. That ship became land bound when it crashed. The command system looked for travelers to lure and lock into its core to feed. In this situation the ship many have dropped into the waters just off shore. The command system could not lure folks in……instead they drag them in to be assimilated……..could be what happened to Bennie.
Not a ghost, just some poor creature rendered invisible or slightly out of phase with their reality from some kind of chance unusual Amesworth radiation exposure? Whatever it is it’s sentient but is frustrated by not being understood.
Irving? Well, he has been unseen since they got to the ladder up from Eden. But I don’t think he’d be as strong as the fourth panel indicates. (Third panel, yes, but not the 4th). And in any case, the 4th panel shows Chic being dragged toward the sea, which I would not expect Irving to do after Duff’s warning.
An alternative could be the amulet that Kirbee gave him to protect him from haints. Probably not, but with Aaron, who knows.
if it isn’t the amulet dragging him, this would be a good time to whip it out and see if it works.
For a while, I was toying with the idea that Kirbee’s haints were the dittos on the ship. Certainly the suck your soul seemed to fit. But Chic was there, too so he would know about them. In any case, if they were her haints, and she had the amulet all along, the amulet did not work very well. The implication was that she had the amulet for some time.
Lots of possibilities here

I hope that is Wally and the dittos… but that isn’t likely.
Okay, Duff, how fast can you run to help Chic?

Looks like Ditto action to me. with or without Wally.

Addendum to my last, Since Dittos network together, it is possible that they know who Chick is and work to save him the same as they would for Wally.

I think that if those blurred captions are words, then it appears to be the same phrase repeated over and over.
Also I think that Dittos are involved, but more along the lines of the Opabina Queen and the Edmund Fitzgerald.

Something’s really bugging Chic. Still, he’s pretty fly.

I was thinking dittoes when they said the water was odd… That’d be one heck of a ditto pool, though.

Something “out of phase” with this reality seems to be a good guess.
