Is it the word or the actual organ that’s funny? I ask out of scientific curiosity.

George Carlin and Johnny Carson used to speak about word choice in comedy. It was pointed out that “pail” is seldom funny, but “bucket” often is.

Other funny body parts include filtrum and uvula. Between “skin” and “epidermis” there’s a vast difference. But, ironically, “vast deferens” is usually unfunny.

The spleen is an organ found in virtually all vertebrates. Similar in structure to a large lymph node, it acts primarily as a blood filter. The word spleen comes from Ancient Greek σπλήν (splḗn). The spleen plays important roles in regard to red blood cells (erythrocytes) and the immune system.

I’m just remembering Johnny Carson hosting the Oscars and milking laughter at the sound of one winner’s name all evening. The guy was named Alan (I think) Splet. He won for sound editing or some technical category like that. But though he was supposed to be in attendance, was nowhere to be found when his name was called. Carson, placing emphasis on the sound of “Splet” gave little updates from time to time about his supposed location, using location names that he also found funny. As in, “Alan Splet’s car has broken down on the Cucamonga Freeway.”

The alphaDictionary has a list of what they believe to be the 100 funniest words in the English language. I think it would have been funnier if he (it) had said “Verne is callipygian.”
