I had never read this poem. Very nice, but a hard one to wrap your head around. Trying to get some experts opinion on the meaning of the poem on line is not easy either. Most pundits agree that trying to get into the authors head to get the meaning of the piece is a waste of time. Kudos to Caulfield if he read it, hard to imagine that would be required reading in grade 3…
You know, if you look at it Caulfield’s way, April ought to be just about the least cruel month. It’s followed by May and eventually June, for heaven’s sake. April is nothing but the opposite of dread.
Also, April is when I get to go swimming in San Francisco, and what’s more the opposite of cruel than that?
