It’s one thing for the sports tail to be wagging the college dog (it’s been like that for decades), but how the HELL can you NOT notice that a “student-athlete” (I can never use that term without lauhging) is NOT taking part in his or her sport? (My personal theory is that the whole scandal was exposed when the parents of a four hundred pound kid photo-shopped his face onto the body of a racehorse jockey……….)
Back in the dark ages, I turned down an athletic scholarship to play soccer at a large State University in favor of paying my way at small, Catholic college where, ironically, I wasn’t good enough to make the school soccer team.
Instead, I played on a pickup team comprised of mostly foreign students attending the college to learn English. We went unscored on and undefeated for 2 years.
