I’ve never been good with plants either but am good with cats and a kid. Managed to keep them alive with little problems. :)

Poor Horace, he failed horticulture and geology, both.

Next time, opt for a harder mineral.

A Houyhnhnm with a black thumb? Most of them are so good and in tune with the primal sylvans of nature. But there is always a variation in any gene pool. I have the same problem as Horace. If I take care of them they die from some disease that turns them into black slime. Leaving it alone and plants flourish.

Rock candy isn’t really rock…

I know few guys who own gravel pits. They sometimes need to crush stones there. I could give you their numbers Horace, if you are interested…

Work your way up. See if you can take care of some imaginary rocks. When you’re able to keep those safe, then try the real ones.

Can’t help you with the plants. As long as the ones in my friends’ houses don’t die when I visit, I call it a win.
