We have a possum living on our property. We toss out things like apple cores and leftover vegetable parts from salads at the edge of the woods. According to the critter control guy, possums are lazy and if Pete (our name for him) can get food without having to walk too far for it, he’ll not forage for it closer to the house.
Possums eat other critters that you don’t want to have around, so we’ll “keep” him.
Interesting tidbit. Oposums only live in the Americas (but called possums anyway). The biggest specie lives in North America and is what most N. Americans think of as possums. Possums are in Australia, New Guinea and that area. Sugar gliders are considered possums.
Here in NZ we have what we call opposums, but they were brought here from Australia. Over there they are a treasured native animal – here they are a pest, and we make amazingly warm knitwear from their fur, mixed with merino wool to make it stronger. Not sure why they need such warm fur in Oz, though …

I knew a young woman back in the 1970’s, seeking, for whatever reason, to leave her past behind.
She had red hair, possibly natural, and fair skin.
One day, skimming the Sunday paper (remember those?), her eyes fell upon an ad for a big sale,
and she found a perfect new name, to suit her adopted Irish identity.
She became, for all the time I knew her, anyway…
