I think Arlo is just reminding him that they are a unit now regardless of whether things a going well or badly.

If this were “FBOFW”, not only would the bistro be successful, there’d be several franchise locations by now. /s

However, Gus did say that the kids have happiness. Maybe the “better” has already begun.

Sounds like Gene and Mary Lou are going against type.

Gene feels guilty because he has it easier than many of his friends, due to the financial help from Mary Lou’s dad. This is the Better part of the marriage vows for Gene, Money from in-laws.

No one gave Gene and Mary Lou credit for wanting to cook a nice meal for their parents. It’s a special occasion and they wanted it to be nice. Instead they got grief for wasting their money. I’d be very upset with some of their comments. Tomorrow they’re going on an austere budget so they should have had tonight.
