You mean, for their owners to rake in the same profits they came to expect during the 20th century, they must embrace other revenue sources. In the digital age, newspapers can operate now with a greatly reduced overhead compared to the print age. And for a few major dailies, they can operate at huge net margins, mainly because one of those new streams is the sale of their work product to other smaller papers.
This, naturally, greatly simplifies the current publishing situation. But it does underscore the role owners’ expectations play in overstating the gravity of it.
