An adventure is somebody, far away in space or time, having a horrible time. I can look back on adventures that were more or less continuous struggle when I was having them. With mosquitoes.
Frazz is the ultimate optimist. He anticipates nothing specific but with expectation that whatever happens will be an adventure. As witness his tee logo. Got to admire that spirit in light of present circumstances.
âA true friend freely, advises justly, assists readily, adventures boldly, takes all patiently, defends courageously, and continues a friend unchangeably.â William Penn
âLife ought to be a struggle of desire toward adventures whose nobility will fertilize the soul.â Rebecca West
Well, already Iâve fed the cats and doggies and taken the doggies for walks, checked the chickens and gathered eggs for a Sunday morning frittata. Later today go to the butcher for some cuts for the humans and odds and ends for the furkids and then review some patientâs files. And thenâŠ
My wife and I have some smaller adventures, like detouring around a detour or taking an unfamiliar route to a familiar place (intentionally, usually). Your adventures donât have to be grandiose, just interesting.
In 1981 when I joined the Navy, they had an ad campaign, âItâs not just a job, it`s an adventure.âI learned that an adventure is a dangerous situation that you survive.
Be honest: What percent of your true adventures were on the agenda? If itâs a low number, you might have a little planning problem. If itâs a high number, you might have an over-planning problem.
Iâm not advocating an absence of planning. You canât make something from nothing, and adventure doesnât typically pop up out of nowhere. Seems to me that what adventure does, typically, is come storming in out of the shadows to obliterate the plan.
I donât know. Maybe it works both ways.
Good pilots say, âPlan the flight and fly the plan.â
The better pilots add, â⊠but donât fall in love with the plan.â
But they sure donât just sit on the ground and leave the plane in the hangar. Thatâs not what airplanes are for.
âSam: I wonder if weâll ever be put into songs or tales. Frodo: [turns around] What? Sam: I wonder if people will ever say, âLetâs hear about Frodo and the Ring.â And theyâll say âYes, thatâs one of my favorite stories. Frodo was really courageous, wasnât he, Dad?â âYes, my boy, the most famousest of hobbits. And thatâs saying a lot.â Frodo: [continue walking] Youâve left out one of the chief characters â Samwise the Brave. I want to hear more about Sam. [stops and turns to Sam] Frodo: Frodo wouldnât have got far without Sam.

I do believe I follow the BIlbo Baggins school of thought on Adventures. âNasty, uncomfortable things! They make you late for dinner.â

Anyone else notice the Magic 8-Ball t-shirt? Nice, and thematically appropriate.
