(This one’s often variously attributed to George Burns, Grouch Marx et al., but the actual first documented occurence seems to be Celeste Holm on a TV panel interview in 1962, when she attributed it to “an actor” she’d worked with. Although in my book she was quite capable of having coined it herself.)

I first heard that line about faking sincerity in the mid 1960’s from a young actor quoting a director. Most likely the line was old even then.
