My wife introduced me to the Jack Reacher novels & I became “engrossed in the series”. I’m now on a very long waiting list for the latest book, at the local library. It has all the elements of fine literature (plot, character, symbolism, structure, suspense, pathos, etc.), with the added bonus of a big guy roaming around beating up bad guys. No wonder It’s a popular series. (Shame about the miscasting in the movie.)

It’s only “being engrossed in a series” the first time through. If you go back at any time and do it again, it’s bingeing.

Hubby is a great sci-fi fan, and introduced me to David Weber’s Safehold series. Long books (600 pages) but an absolutely fascinating saga – a mix of history and sci-fi. And I’m not at all fond of sci-fi as a rule.

Lee Child and David Baldacci have similar characters, Jack Reacher and John Puller. John Sandford has two compelling characters, Lucas Davenport and Virgil Flowers. Action and police procedurals.

Pratchett’s disk world has that kind of cannon, although it is more about the world than of any one character (who can go from main focus to cameo and anywhere in between) – sadly a little weak at the end the sicker he got (and I still wonder if part of Raising Steam was finished by someone else because some of the characters didn’t ring true to what I knew of them ) , but I have several books that I read until they disintegrated. An author you truly love to read is a blessing and no mistake :)

My son’s fiance` put my Stephen King hardcovers on the bottom rail of the basement staircase instead of a bookcase. Filled the whole 10’ length plus.

Must be Lee Child. He included my late brother-in-law in one of his more recent books…
