Also, as regards the oft told tale that the name HAL was concocted by selecting letters alphabetically preceding I, B, and M, Clarke and Kubrick said it was a coincidence.
Watson and Crick said the same about the RNA/SOB phenomenon.
Read in a book somewhere that HAL was a dig at a certain company (look at the letter that follows each individual letter in “HAL” and put them together)
What I find sad, is that many people these days have no clue what HAL or 2001 a Space Odyssey is. I’ve used Robin William’s joke from “Man of the Year” where he said “Hal liked me” and just got blank stares.

He’s dressed as Dave, who came close to death because he ignored repeated warnings put on his helmet while he was in the airlock.

Haven’t there been updates to the HAL 9000? If memory serves, it was built in 1992.

I was dwelling overseas (in a Southern European locale) when I saw the movie first-run. Didn’t much care for it. Haven’t seen it again since then.
But I kinda think a HAL 9000 would be really out-of-date these days! Wouldn’t you prefer a nice, shiny, new MacBook Pro, Lio?

I think Lio’s looking forward to slowly extracting the memory slabs while asking HAL to croon ‘Daisy’..
