That’s exactly how we decorated this year…. all my glass ornaments are up high and the wooden and plastic ones are on the lower half of the tree. And, we used many more lights than we would normally use. (Hubby brought home a 9-foot tree, for the first time EVER, so it’s a good thing we had lots of light strings.)The mantlepiece ornaments and figures are “glued” on with museum putty. We are expecting several under-7-year-old visitors, some of which are rambunctious (to put it politely).
One year we put wooden ornaments high so the puppy wouldn’t chew on them and the soft ones down low for the cat and our baby to play with. One of our sons copies my husband’s old partner and keeps his decorated tree in a play chorale safely away from the baby and puppy.
With five cats in the house, we decorated the bottom branches with the heavy unbreakable ornaments. You know, the ones that make the most noise when they get batted across the floor at three am….
We do not have pets and have not been fortunate to have trouble. When my husband’s older niece was young – 3, 4 years old – she would come to us once a week as the babysitter at her mom’s gym was not there on Wednesdays. Knowing her mom would never allow her to help with their tree (everything has to be exact and perfect) we only decorated the top 3/4 of the tree and left lots of non-breakable ornaments for her to put on the tree when we did the tree. We also bought her a Christmas stocking – sewed a picture of her to it – so she could hang her stocking here also.
Normally have a large main tree in our living room. I collect teddy bears & the bear ornaments started taking over the tree. At that point we had also bought a new tree. I took the top “small tree” top from the old tree and set it up in the spare bedroom – aka, the teddys room and took most of the bear ornaments on it. Husband liked it so much that he had me set it up on top of a trunk at the top of the stairs. This tree has developed into an entire village of teddy (and other) bear figurines.
One year, we were not able to set up the main tree as we were having work done in the house and bought a small tree. I had always wanted to set up a tree in our studio with ornaments we had made. The next year when we had our big tree up again, I made the small one we had bought into a tree in our studio using most, but not all, of our handmade ornaments.
I then noticed the same problem had developed with our Colonial Williamsburg member ornaments – they were taking over the main tree. We bought a smaller tree & set it up in the dining room & moved most of same to there.
House in general is overdecorated.
Well, we have been going through all sorts of odd things that have happened to us over a little longer than the past year in which all sorts of things have gone wrong and many had to be done over several times & were unusually busy recently. So this year the small tree with assorted special ornaments is all the Christmas decorating that was done.

Words of wisdom, I’d say.

My dog doesn’t care, and it’s not a true and lovely tree till my grandsons help decorate. Soon enough they will grow up and lose interest.

That’s great, until the dog knocks the tree over.

No, the point was that he was doing it wrong.

She is SO right… except in our case a cat is the problem … and it totally stopped us from putting “icicles” on the tree

They’re having a continuity issue, yesterday the tree was decorated, today it’s not.

With a 7 month old kitten in the house, all of the ornaments are plastic and/or unbreakable.

First time I have to agree with her. When we had cats the cheaper ones went on the bottom.

When I had toddlers and a puppy, I put the tree and all the gifts in the playpen.
