My husband was for many years director of a mental health center/day school. He was the one who had to decide if to close school. Due to the location spread of the clients and staff he had to decide at around 5 am – and we are not morning people. If he decided to open he had to get up again and go to work.
We finally came up with a system. I would stay up and watch what was happening on the TV news – including the school district closures – and then wake him to make the decision.
If they were closing he would call the director of education to start the chain to the teachers and let the school bus companies know and the director of counseling to call the counselors and one of the office staff who start the chain to the office staff. The counselors would each call the children who were their clients.
After the first time he started the phone chains he told each person to have the next 3 phone numbers after them as people were not always home at the numbers the agency had and if one person was not home and the person calling them did not have the next person’s number an entire section of the staff would not be called and would go to work.

Some school districts have begun putting the day’s lessons online when there are snow days. The kids are expected to complete their work via computer.
At least they still get to stay home.

Oh, he also called the local TV station for them to add it to their “zipper” list of closed places.
